Rake Calculation Methods

I wrote about the rakeback that you can get whilst playing poker, a couple of weeks back.  Now lets take a closer look at rake calculation methods.

Different poker rooms use different ways to determine their players’ MGRs (MGR = Monthly Gross Revenue). Because the rakeback that you get is a direct % of this MGR, you should definitely know what method your poker room uses to be able to assess the amount of rakeback you’re due.

This is vital information for a player who wants to optimize his/her performance.  Some rake contribution methods may offer an advantage, depending on your style of poker play.  So it pays to know how your rake is quantified, so that you can maximize your returns.

Some poker rooms use the dealt rake method.  The dealt rake method distributes the rake resulting from a hand to all those who were dealt into the hand.  This means you’ll get rake contribution even if you do nothing but sit there and get dealt in.  This method offers an obvious advantage to tight passive players who are not fond of putting their money into the pot.  Those who play a loose and aggressive game, will end up producing rake for these tight passive rocks.

The contributed rake method only offers MGR share to those who actually put money into the pot.  While it’s much more accurate than the dealt rake method, the contributed rake method still features some shortcomings: it distributes the resulting rake equally among those who put money into the pot, regardless of the actual sums involved.  This way, aggressive players will still end up generating rake and rakeback for those who play a loose-passive game.

Finally, the weighted contributed rake calculation method is the only one which is more accurate.  Player contributions are considered quantitatively.  If you put more money into the pot than an opponent, you will be allotted more rake contribution.  If you’re a loose-aggressive player, this method is in your favor.  If you’re a tight-passive rock though, you’ll barely generate any rakeback in a room featuring this rake contribution method.  When it comes to poker propping, the method used to calculate rake can have an even bigger affect.
